The Bow Valley Ultra (BVU) Fun Run (50 miler) is scheduled for Saturday, October 5 with a recommended start of 6am in West Bragg Creek (WBC) Provincial Day Use Area. This is a point to point run largely on the Trans Canada Trail (TCT) that will finish at RunUphill in Canmore.
This is a super fun way to connect with community, set an FKT, run from the foothills to the Rockies (crazy!!!) and just enjoy a super long day in a gorgeous backyard.
If you are considering joining us for all or a portion of the BVU Fun Run, please note the following:
You are fully responsible for yourself. Lewiston Ultra Events accepts no liability for damages and/or losses related to misadventure. This is not a sanctioned event. The BVU Fun Run is considered a social group run/meet up run without guides or leads waiting at transitions or sweeping. If you have to bail prior to your intended exit point, you are responsible for extracting yourself from the wilderness so please run with a satellite messenger if you have and means of communication.
The BVU Fun Run route will not be marked or flagged by Lewiston Ultra Events. As most of the route is on the TCT, there are permanent blazes installed on those trails already; however it is up to you to figure out what to do at intersections. Route is on Trail Forks, available HERE. You are responsible for knowing and understanding the route.
Consider joining the Lewiston Ultra Events facebook community page as this will be great opportunity to post/share/lean on each other, coordinate plans to run together/car pool, etc.
Aside from some thicker bushes between Kestrel/Tom Snow and the Husky well road/Tom Snow, there is no bushwacking or scrambling; you will be on established trails and almost entirely below treeline for the BVU Fun Run.
This is not the confirmed route for the inaugural Bow Valley Ultra. While it will be conceptually similar in kind, the inaugural event will start/finish in Canmore, likely not initially have a 50mi distance and will incorporate more vert/alpine exposure. Long story short…. there will be more vert in the inaugural Bow Valley Ultra (even though there are flatter WSER qualifiers out there).
A low-key ‘aid station’ will be available at Powderface Road/Lusk Pass (35KM) and Dead Man’s Flats at the Guy Lafleur road crossing (66KM). Water, nutrition fuel, warm food, etc will be available but please do not expect the same spread at the aid stations as our other events. Powderface Road (35KM) ‘aid station’ will be set up 9am-2pm. Dead Man’s Flats (66KM) ‘aid station’ will be set up until 12-6pm. Any additional aid or access for aid is up to you to organize, however; as bear fattening season is in full swing, we strongly discourage runners from caching food and other attractants out in the open.
We are offering the option of having a drop bag at the Powderface Road/Lusk Pass (35KM) ‘aid station.’ Any drop bag must brought to the start line (WBC) by 6am - we will depart promptly at 6:10am and will not wait for late drop bags. Drop bags can be picked up from RunUphill after 5pm. Any drop bags not picked up from RunUphill within 30 days will be donated.
If you plan to join for only a portion of the BVU Fun Run, it is up to you to coordinate pick up/drop off, etc. It is also up to you to coordinate getting back to your vehicle from the finish or coordinating carpool from Canmore to the start line (WBC). For the carless - no Canmore/Bragg Creek and Calgary/Bragg Creek transit option exists. It is in theory possible to run this without a car from Calgary by taking a taxi/rideshare to Bragg and a bus from Canmore.
Post run refreshments, pizza, cheer, giveaways & high fives will be hosted at RunUphill (4pm-10pm). Apologies if you intend to finish after 10pm as we cannot keep the store open past this time.
In turn of joining, runners will be asked to provide feedback to prep for the inaugural event (survey will be available post run at RunUphill). In appreciation of your valuable feedback, we will be providing early BVU swag (also available post run at RunUphill).
The BVU Fun run will be cancelled with a minimum 48h notice in the event of inclement weather.
